HURRAY! Today we have two fashionable reasons to celebrate!
No. 1: REBELLE turns 6 today.
No. 2: Coco Chanel would have been 136 years old today – All love to Coco! (1883 – 1971)
On the occasion of our today’s birthdays we present you – under our common credo:
“fashion fades, only style remains” – the Chanel DNA & the omnipresent style rules of the French fashion icon.
Happy Birthday, Coco!
The Chanel charisma
“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”
Coco Chanel revolutionized fashion in a very special way and contributed a great deal to the fashionable liberation of women. As the inventor of the little black dress, the Chanel tweed costume, the fashion jewellery and the iconic Chanel Bag 2.55 – she is still a role model for natural elegance and straightforwardness today. With her androgynous look, Coco became an absolute pioneer and set trends that fundamentally changed women’s silhouettes for the first time. The desire to feel free and still seduce was her philosophy. Apropos philosophy – just like REBELLE, Coco Chanel was already an advocate of sustainability at the time.
Long live sustainability!
“I am against fashion that is ephemeral. I can’t accept people throwing clothes away just because it’s spring”.
We can understand this Chanel quote as a wake-up call and food for thought for our consumer behaviour today. Disposable fashion or fast-fashion, as it is widespread today, would have been an absolute nightmare for the fashion icon. Even then, she appealed to women to invest more in timeless classics and good quality instead of quantity. And Mademoiselle Chanel is right: new trends will always emerge in the fashion world, but certain classics will always remain with us. Which gives us a perfect transition to the next theme:
The be-all & end-all of basics
“Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury.”
Coco Chanel created simple, timeless and elegant designs. She was convinced that every woman should have a certain collection of basics in her wardrobe, with which she is always well dressed. These include, for example, a classic coat in black, a white blouse and the iconic long-sleeved shirt with stripes. We’re already on Coco’s style list for the next item:
The French flair
“It’s always better to be slightly underdressed.”
The typical Chanel look with short, boxy tweed jackets can be easily broken up with casual fashion pieces such as jeans and a maritime striped shirt. Timeless and très cool – that’s how the Parisian do. With the French look, colour also comes into play & that means:
Spotlight on black & white
“Black is perfect. White too. Together they are pure harmony.”
At that time, black women’s clothing was associated with grief. Coco Chanel transformed black into a colour that is elegant & sensual and can be worn on any occasion. The combination of black and white became from now on the epitome of sophisticated chic and stylish understatements. An iconic design from the creative pen of Coco embodies this divise in perfect form & so we come to point no. 6 of the Chanel DNA:
Best buy
“In her most beautiful dress, no woman will be too cold.”
1. The icon: the little black dress – shortly: LBD
2. The masterpiece: the bouclé tweed jacket with border hem and gold buttons
3. The classic: the quilt bag 2.55 – named after the launch date in February 1955
And what should not be missing from an individual look under any circumstances? Exactly:
Pearls are a girl’s best friend
“Jewellery is not meant to arouse envy – at best amazement.”
Coco Chanel was horrified by the preference of many women at that time to show off with expensive jewellery and invented in short: fashion jewellery. She also realized that nothing adorns as much as delicate shimmering pearls. She herself liked to combine short and long pearl necklaces and advised: “Before a lady leaves the house, she should look in the mirror and remove one accessory!” As you know, less is more! And so we close the Chanel list with the last point:
Unique key pieces
“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.”
Another very important part of the Chanel cosmos was camellia – simply because it was Coco Chanel’s favorite flower. For this reason, it still adorns many Chanel dresses and accessories, made from a wide variety of materials. Just like Coco, you should also have a few pieces that make you personal and make your style extraordinary and memorable. A simple accessory makes a big difference here. Feel free & be yourself!
